Praised by the Wine Spectator, the Wine Advocate and the New York Times, Zinfandel helped put Joel Gott wines on the map, and gave Joel the chance to produce additional varietals. He made the wine with the help of his then-girlfriend and winemaker Sarah, whom he married the following year. Maxing out his credit cards, Joel purchased several tons of Zinfandel from family friend and grape grower Tom Dillian in 1996. Running the market gave Joel an education in business and a view of the wine industry that allowed him to spot the need for quality, value wines in the marketplace. In 1993, Joel and his brother Duncan scraped together the money to purchase Palisades Market in Calistoga, transforming the small market into a retail shop with gourmet prepared foods and fine wines. He later got a job with Real Restaurant Group before going out on his own. Born in Napa Valley and raised in the Sierra Foothills where his parents started Montevina Winery, Joel later moved to Carmel and upon graduating high school went to work for Kenwood Winery in Sonoma County. In 2007, Alisa was promoted to winemaker at Joel Gott Wines where she oversees grower relationships, blending, and the production of various varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Grenache.Ĭoming from five generations of California vintners, it’s no surprise that Joel became a wine and food entrepreneur. In 2003, Sarah brought her on board as the assistant winemaker at Joel Gott Wines. It was at Phelps that Alisa met winemaker Sarah Gott, who became Alisa’s mentor. The next summer Alisa interned at Schramsberg in Napa Valley, and after graduation found a position working harvest at Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Enjoying the combination of science, art and agriculture, she returned to school and changed her major to Viticulture and Enology. It was no surprise that after high school, she went to the University of California at Davis to study Agriculture and Business.Ī summer spent interning at Korbel in Sonoma County between her sophomore and junior years though, altered Alisa’s course. Surrounded by cherry and pistachio orchards in the Sacramento River Delta, she raised livestock for the county fair.
